Jhum cultivation has its roots in the tradition and culture of the diverse ethnic groups of north-eastern India. Keeping aside the geographical factors, it has other important factors. The prevalence of Jhum cultivation in this part of the country is closely associated with the socio-cultural life of the people, which will remain for ever in the area.

In addition to the socioeconomic and cultural aspects, jhumming cultivation is done in Northeastern states because the people of these areas are mostly tribals and have not an abundance of various fertilizers. So, they use primitive means of shifting cultivation due to which, by burning plantation, they get rid of weeds, pests and insects without any use of expensive pesticides and fertilizers.
However, this type of cultivation reduces soil fertility and induces soil erosion.
In the nation sample survey ( NSS),31 St round(1976-77)& survey on Jhum cultivation was undertaken in the rural area of the Northeastern states. Jhum cultivation or shifting cultivation is a method of cultivation highly prevalent in the North-Eastern states has attracted some attention in recent time. This is because Jhum cultivation is considered to be a wasteful technique compared to the traditional method of cultivation. Jhum cultivation is done in the hills area mostly by the tribal people.
