Overview
CFL is an alternative school started by a group interested in the educational philosophy of J. Krishnamurti. As a community of teachers, parents and children, we are concerned with learning. This learning involves not only academics and other life skills, but also a deeper learning about ourselves, our relationships and the way we respond to the challenges of life.
Centre For Learning, started in 1990 by a group of educators, is an attempt to explore the nature of learning and its relationship to the challenges we face today. We feel that living creatively and meaningfully demands from each of us a serious inner enquiry free from dogma and ideology. Without this, there looms the danger of losing ourselves in a world that values achievement and success above all else, unmindful of the damage to nature and community. Education has been reduced to preparing the young to compete in such a world.
CFL is a small school outside Bangalore for students between the ages of six and nineteen. As educators, we wish to meet the challenge of creating an environment where children and adults can inquire together in freedom, security and affection. Perhaps this can awaken a creativity in the individual, which will contribute greatly toward a spirit of responsibility and regeneration in society. The curriculum also aims to help students discover their interests and nurture rigorous academic skills.
In January 2000 the school moved to a twenty acre permanent campus about 45 km from Bangalore. The land and the buildings at the campus are the result of generous support from a large community of donors from all over the world. Facilities at the campus are simple and cost-effective.
As a group of adults we work cooperatively, without hierarchy or formal structure. Working closely together in such an environment has been deeply challenging and an enjoyable experience. CFL receives no funding from the government. Fees from students meet only part of the expenses. Salaries are need based. We have managed to create a small endowment fund, the interest from which meets some of the deficit.

ready to question and get questioned. The school explores the possibility
of what it takes to educate a child without imparting him/her what is right or
wrong, instead enables him/her to explore it for himself. They also see a
possibility of growing a child without a carrot or stick approach. The school
is 19years old and has group of 25 passionate educators and 75 students
from I to XII standard. The teachers are on their own journey of
their self-inquiry
while they are ticking with their passion for education. Students don't have
exams till IX standard and they bridge well with the further conventional
education systems. What I feel from my last 3 years of this school's journey
as a parent is "Can I create and emotionally sound individual?" and my answer
is "Yes."
