Before the printing press, manuscripts had to be copied by hand, which was hard laborious work. This made them expensive and difficult to obtain. Therefore knowledge was limited to a few rich people. With the advent of printing press, it became easier, and more affordable to make multiple copies of books and pamphlets which were readily available to the masses. And since that enlarged the scale of readership, more authors started to wrote books. When people read, they grew aware about the wrongs present in their society and started to rebel against it. This was why people in the 18th century thought that print culture would bring about enlightenment and end despotism.
