Old English was not static, and its usage covered a period of 700 years, from the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain in the 5th century to the late 11th century, some time after the Norman invasion. Perhaps around 85% of Old English words are no longer in use, but those that survived are the basic elements of Modern English vocabulary.

The English language's journey began with Old English, formed by Germanic tribes in England, enriched by Norse and Latin influences. After the Norman Conquest, Middle English emerged, blending Old Norman and native roots. Early Modern English saw a vocabulary boost from Latin and Greek during the Renaissance. It then evolved with standardization and pronunciation changes. Modern English, driven by British colonialism, spread globally, resulting in diverse dialects and regional variations, making it one of the world's most widely spoken languages today.

The English language has evolved over centuries through a complex process. It has its roots in the Germanic languages spoken by the Anglo-Saxons in what is now England. Old English emerged around the 5th century and was heavily influenced by Latin and Norse due to invasions and cultural exchanges. The Norman Conquest in 1066 introduced French and Latin influences, leading to Middle English. The printing press in the 15th century helped standardize the language, and the Renaissance brought an influx of new words from Latin and Greek. Modern English began to take shape in the late 15th century and continued to evolve through colonization and global interactions, incorporating words from various languages. Today, English is one of the most widely spoken languages worldwide.
