Ok, what was posted before is not so correct, so I as a teacher of German language and history want to give a more substantial answer. The German language has its roots from the germanic tribes. They were coming probably from the caucasus region. (This is the reason for the word "caucasian"). They conquered europe from the east, beating the Celts. In the end they conquered complete europe. There were several tribes with similar but not the same languages. E.g. the Saxonians or the Franks. France took its name from the Franks (and they were named by their weapon "Franziska"). The development of the languages of the specific european countries was influenced by different historical circumstances. E.g. Italy, Spain, Romania was mostly influenced by the roman language. Because the german territory was only occupied a little by the romans it keeps mostly germanic. It was Martin Luther in the 16th century who created what we call Hochdeutsch ("high German") today. So the German language of today has its root in different germanic languages/dialects, constructed by Luther, influenced mostly by the roman, also by the the greek language and with later `imports` from neighbouring countries like France. German language originated in Scandinavia ie northern Europe. Nomadic tribes living here raided the Roman Empire and forned the 2 countries of Germany and France. Their language mixed with the Roman dialects and Latin. In France the influence of Latin was strong as a result of which the unique French language was formed. In Germany however the Invaders retained a stronger influence of their own language. Fir this reason Getman is very similar to north European languages like Danish and Norwegian. read less
