No. There are no rules if you are new bee and wish to explore yourself with own creative stuff. When it comes to theme of nature, engineering, automobiles etc., one must follow the picture colors and its contrast according to its importance in the document or canvas. Never let diluted the important portions go diluted by use of other colors is advised. Automobiles, engineering has pretty good deep, dark shades of blues, metallic gray shades were advised. read less

Contrast is the key to make design effective. Contrast could be of shades, colours with the contrast in shape and sizes too. For colour scheme go thoroughly with the theory of colour-wheel & gray scale in depth.

Things to understand about the meaning of color is that there is no substantive evidence that support a universal system of color meaning. It’s not that colors themselves have specific meaning, but rather we have culturally assigned meanings to them. While some color symbolism exists globally (red as the color of a stop sign, yellow for caution), color symbolism tends to be more common within a given culture than across different cultures (white is used for weddings in Western cultures and for funerals in Eastern cultures). Even within a single culture individual differences will exist. You and I will not necessarily be affected in the same way by seeing the same color. The above means that it’s important to understand who your target audience is and how your audience attaches meaning to color. Again it’s not that a color has a specific meaning on its own. Just use appropriate colors so the design convey's the right meaning. read less

Science started taking colours seriously only in the last 60 years; until then, it was merely considered an act of PLAY. Colours go way beyond as a tool of decoration. I would rather say 'guidelines' than 'rules' for choosing colours. Theory of Color gives a vast understanding of colour themes for the selection of your colour palette. Every colour depicts a sense of emotion and feelings, and with a combination of colours, this possibility is endless. There are no rules as such, there is no correct or incorrect use of colour, but if you understand what emotion & feeling to trigger within the observer, then that would be it.

The process of finding the most relevant colors of a photo is called Color quantization - there are many different algorithms to do that some of which are aiming to be fast, some which try to get the best fit. But since you ask this in "Photoshop Techniques" you are probably more interested in a hands-on approach: In Photoshop the easiest way is to select Image -> Mode -> Indexed Color then in the following popup you select what algorithm should be used for the color reduction and how many colors you want to reduce the image to. A good choice is one of the "Local: Perceptual/Selective/Adaptive" and if you want to use the colors as a color scheme for a website to pick a rather low number of colors like 5 to 8. Once you have converted the image to Index Colors you can see the color palette by opening Image -> Mode -> Color Table. That window also allows you to save the colors as an ACT palette file. Keep in mind:- 1. Convert your photograph from RGB to Index Color Mode and choose your settings. 2. Go to Image > Mode > Color Table to create your color table. 3. Save the color table as ASE rather than ACT file. This way, you can use it for any Adobe product rather than just Photoshop. read less
