An acoustic guitar will produce appropriate volume even when played unplugged (without plugging into an amplifier) or without any microphone placed near it. It has a sound hole and the body is hollow. 

Electric guitars can be solid bodied and are meant to be played through an amplifier. They have pickups for this purpose. 

Acoustic guitars with pickups that are able to be plugged into an amplifier are referred to as semi- acoustic guitars.
