0Erb's Paralysis:-
It is the region of Upper Trunk of Brachial Plexus where six nerves meet.
- C5 Root
- C6 Root
- Suprascapular Nerve
- Nerve to Subclavius
- Anterior division
- Posterior division
Injury to this region causes Erb's palsy.
Causes of injury:
- Birth injury
- fall on shoulder
- during Anaesthesia
Nerve roots involved - Mainly C5 and partly C6
Muscles paralysed - Mainly biceps brachii, deltoid, brachialis, brachioradialis. Partly supraspinatus, infraspinatus and supinator.
Deformity and position of the limb -
Arm - hangs by the side, arm is adducted, medially rotated.
Forearm - Extended, pronated
This deformity is called "policeman's tip hand" or "waiter's tip" or "porter's tip hand"
Disability- Following movements lost
- Abduction & lateral rotation of arm at shoulder joint
- Flexion & supination of forearm
- Biceps and supinator jerks lost
- Sensations are lost over a small area over lower part of Deltoid.
