The Probability Theory has its origin in the 16th century in – ‘The Book on Games of Chance’, which was written by an Italian physician and mathematician J.Cardan. Other great mathematicians of all time, Pierre Simon Laplace, James Bernoulli, A. de Moivre also made noteworthy contributions to Probability. Laplace’s book, ‘Theorie Analytique des Probabilities’, published in the year 1812, is considered to be one of the greatest contributions by a person to the Theory of Probability. In modern days, probability finds wide applications in various fields such as Economics, Biology, Physics, Sociology, Genetics etc.

Probability can be defined as the chance/possibility of things happening in future. It is usually expressed as a decimal, a fraction, as ‘odds’, or as a percentage between 0 to 1. Earlier in class 9, you have learnt about empirical/experimental probabilities of events that are based on the results of actual experiments. In this chapter, you will study about the difference between experimental probability and theoretical probability, probability of a sure event, impossible event, etc.
