In Chapter 8, we studied about trigonometric ratios. In this chapter, we will study the applications of trigonometry in our day to day life. The knowledge of trigonometry is helpful in determining the position of islands in relation to their longitudes and latitudes. Trigonometry is used in navigation, geography and also astronomy. Surveyors have been using trigonometry for centuries now. ‘Theodolite’ is one such instrument that is based on the principles of trigonometry. It is mainly used for measuring angles with a rotating telescope. As we have already studied about trigonometric identities in the previous chapter, we will now study about heights and distances.
In applications of Trigonometry Class 10, we study about –
1. The angle of elevation – It is the angle formed by the lone of sight with the horizontal when it is above the horizontal level.
2. The line of depression – It is the line drawn from the eye of an observer to the point in the object viewed in the observer.
3. The angle of depression – It is the angle formed by the line of sight with the horizontal when it is below the horizontal level.
