On 26th January 1930, the Indian National Congress declared Purna Swaraj or Complete Independence from British Raj. There after every year it was celebrated as the "Independence Day". But when India became independent from colonial tyranny on 15th of August 1947, the leaders of the country decided to commemorate 26th January 1950 by declaring it as the Republic Day, bringing into force the New Constitution of India replacing the Government of India Act of 1935.
