Carnatic music originates from South India whereas, Hindustani Music is from North India. Carnatic music is homogenous and Hindustani, hetrogenous. Carnatic music doesn't have any gharanas whereas, Hindustani music has several like Lucknow, Jaipur, Kirana, Agra, etc.

And also we can say that carnatic is homogeneous and hindustani is heterogeneous. Usually hindustani music belongs from northern region and carnatic music is from souther region. Carnatic bit tough to learn as it is gamakas and kirti based music.
