Yoga is derived from that Sanskrit root word “yuj” which means to join or unite. The simplest translation of the word yoga, then, is “Union".The science of yoga has its origin thousands of years ago, long before the first religions or belief systems were born. In the yogic lore, Shiva is seen as the first yogi or Adiyogi, and the first Guru or Adi Guru.

The basic philosophical premise of yoga carries with it the implication that the possibility of liberation is a basic part of what it means to be human.

So, yoga has been around for as long as humans have.
